Why Choose Judo?

Judo, a martial art that originated from Japan in 1882, translates to “the gentle way.” It is a combat sport that emphasizes the development of both physical techniques and mental discipline. The objective of judo is to use your opponent’s momentum to execute throws, disrupting their balance and landing them on their backs. In addition, judo incorporates ground techniques where athletes can immobile their opponents, either through pins, chokeholds, or arm bars, depending on age and skill. Since 1964, judo has been an official Olympic sport and is widely popular all around the world.

For many, choosing judo as a sport can be a transformative experience. Our experienced instructors aim to uphold the traditional values and methods of judo while adapting their instruction to navigate modern, competitive judo. At Bryn Mawr Judo, we want to help all members reach their individual goals. Whether you join for self-improvement or for a competitive outlet, judo offers the opportunity to grow both physically and mentally, building resilience, discipline, and a sense of community along the way!
